1874 – FRED J MALCOLM
Born in 1874, Fredrick J Malcolm was renowned for his expertise in diamonds, emeralds, and pearls. He began his distinguished career in 1894 with Sharman D. Neill at 12 Donegal Place, where he worked until 1927, laying the foundation for what would become a lasting legacy in fine jewellery.
1926 – CHICHESTER STREET
Fred J Malcolm secures the lease for 18 Chichester Street, establishing what would become a historic and enduring presence in the heart of Belfast. This iconic location, opposite City Hall, remains home to the flagship store to this day.
1932 – MR & MRS MALCOLM

1940 – FREDRICK J MALCOLM
On February 22nd, 1940, Fredrick J Malcolm passed away, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in fine jewellery and gemstone expertise. His vision and dedication laid the foundation for a business that continues to thrive generations later.
1966 – BILLY WATT
A new chapter begins as owners Mr. Mallagh and Mr. Downing appoint brothers William (Billy) and Stanley Watt as directors. This marks the start of the Watt family’s stewardship, continuing the tradition of excellence established by Fred J Malcolm.
1973 – NEIL WATT
At just 17 years old, Neil Watt, the eldest son of William (Billy) Watt, joins the family business. His early entry marks the beginning of the next generation’s commitment to upholding the values and traditions of Fred J Malcolm.
1975 – GARY WATT
Two years after his brother Neil, Gary Watt joins the family business, further strengthening the Watt family's presence and dedication to continuing the Fred J Malcolm legacy with passion and pride.
1992 – NEIL, MARTIN & GARY
Neil, Gary, and cousin Martin Watt are officially appointed as directors, marking a new era of leadership. With the third generation now at the helm, the family’s legacy of craftsmanship, care, and tradition continues to flourish.
1999 – BOTANIC AVENUE
Expanding the family business, Gary and cousin Martin Watt open a new branch on Botanic Avenue. This modern addition brings the timeless elegance of Fred J Malcolm to a vibrant new part of Belfast, introducing a fresh audience to the brand’s heritage and craftsmanship.
2002 – LISBURN ROAD
The Botanic Avenue store relocates to the fashionable Lisburn Road, embracing a sleek new look with a contemporary glass and steel façade. This modern space reflects the evolving style of Fred J Malcolm while maintaining its commitment to quality and tradition.
2010 – RENOVATIONS
The historic Chichester Street store undergoes a major expansion and interior renovation, transforming it into a luxury destination in the heart of Belfast. Blending timeless elegance with modern sophistication, the refreshed space enhances the customer experience while honouring its heritage.
2013 – RENOVATIONS
The Lisburn Road branch receives a contemporary interior facelift, aligning the store with modern retail trends and the evolving expectations of today’s customers. The update ensures a seamless blend of style, comfort, and the exceptional service Fred J Malcolm is known for.
